Explanation

Promotional Mix

The promotional mix (or marketing communication mix) is the specific blend of advertising, public relations, personal selling, sales promotion, and direct marketing tools that the company uses to persuasively communicate customer value and build customer relationships.

1. Advertising

  • Any paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods, or services by an identified sponsor.
  • Media: TV, radio, print, billboards, digital ads (banners, video).
  • AIDA model: A classic framework for advertising effectiveness: Attention → Interest → Desire → Action.

2. Sales Promotion

  • Short-term incentives to encourage the purchase or sale of a product or service.
  • Examples: Discounts, coupons, buy-one-get-one-free offers, samples, contests, rebates.
  • Aims to stimulate immediate purchase or trial.

3. Public Relations (PR)

  • Building good relations with the company's various publics by obtaining favorable publicity, building a good corporate image, and handling or heading off unfavorable rumors, stories, and events.
  • Tools: Press releases, sponsorships, special events, corporate websites, public service activities.
  • Publicity: Unpaid media coverage, often perceived as more credible than advertising.

4. Personal Selling

  • Personal presentation by the firm's sales force for the purpose of making sales and building customer relationships.
  • Characteristics: Involves direct person-to-person interaction, allowing for immediate feedback and customization.
  • Cost: Often the highest cost per contact, but also the most persuasive.

5. Direct Marketing

  • Engaging directly with carefully targeted individual consumers and customer communities to both obtain an immediate response and build lasting customer relationships.
  • Channels: Direct mail, email marketing, telemarketing, SMS marketing, online direct marketing.
  • Database marketing: Uses customer databases to tailor personalized messages and offers.

IMC (Integrated Marketing Communication)

Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) involves carefully integrating and coordinating the company's many communication channels to deliver a clear, consistent, and compelling message about the organization and its products. The goal is to ensure all promotional tools work together harmoniously.

Push vs. Pull Strategy

  • Push Strategy: A promotion strategy that calls for using the sales force and trade promotion to push the product through channels. The producer promotes the product to channel members, who in turn promote it to final consumers.
  • Pull Strategy: A promotion strategy that calls for spending a lot on consumer advertising and promotion to induce final consumers to buy the product, creating a demand vacuum that 'pulls' the product through the channel.
