Product Life Cycle (PLC)
The Product Life Cycle (PLC) describes the stages a product typically goes through from its introduction into the market to its eventual withdrawal. This concept helps marketers understand how products evolve and adjust strategies accordingly.
Four Stages
Stage Sales Profits Marketing Objectives & Strategies Introduction Low or zero Negative or low Objective: Create product awareness and trial. Strategies: High promotion spending, penetration or skimming pricing. Growth Rapidly rising Rapidly rising Objective: Maximize market share. Strategies: Improve product quality, add features, enter new markets, lower prices to attract more buyers. Maturity Peak, then plateau or slight fall Peak, then declining Objective: Maximize profit while defending market share. Strategies: Diversify brand and models, competitive pricing, extensive distribution, heavy promotion to differentiate. Decline Falling Falling Objective: Reduce expenditure and milk the brand. Strategies: Harvest (reduce costs to maximize short-term profit), divest (sell or liquidate the brand), or reformulate. Extension Strategies (at Maturity/Decline)
These strategies are employed to extend the life of a product that is in the maturity or decline stage:
- Market Development: Finding new markets for existing products (e.g., targeting new demographic segments or geographic regions).
- Product Development: Modifying the product by adding new features, improving quality, or changing styling (e.g., launching 'lite' or 'whole grain' variants of biscuits).
- Market Modification: Increasing consumption by convincing current users to use more, or by finding new uses for the product.
PLC vs. Brand Life Cycle
It is important to distinguish between the life cycle of an individual product and the life cycle of a brand. A brand can often outlive individual products within its portfolio by continually launching new variants, models, or even entirely new product lines under the same brand name.
