King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah

Description

Birendra Bir Bikram Shah (1945

		–2001) ruled Nepal from 1972 to 2001. He presided over the **1990 People's Movement** which led to the restoration of multiparty democracy and transformed Nepal into a constitutional monarchy. Birendra declared Nepal a **Zone of Peace**, recognized by over 100 countries. He was killed in the **Royal Palace Massacre** on June 1, 2001, along with most of the royal family.
