- Title
- Bagmati River
- Description
The Bagmati River is one of the most culturally, religiously, and historically significant rivers in Nepal. Originating from Bagdwar on the Shivapuri hills north of Kathmandu, it flows south through the Kathmandu Valley before exiting into the Terai and India.
Key Characteristics
- Religious Significance: It is considered highly sacred by Hindus and Buddhists. The holy Pashupatinath Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is situated on its banks.
- River Class: It is a second-class river in Nepal, originating from the mid-hills (Mahabharat range / Shivapuri) rather than the high Himalayas.
- Environmental Restoration: The river suffers from severe pollution in the urban Kathmandu section. Initiatives like the Bagmati Clean-up Campaign and the Bagmati Civilization Project work toward its restoration.
