Economic Importance
Agriculture is a key driver of Nepal's economy, employing approximately $60%$ of the national workforce and contributing around $25%$ to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Crop Classifications
- Food Crops: Paddy (rice) is the primary staple crop, followed by wheat, maize, millet, and barley.
- Cash Crops: Commercial crops include high-value tea (widely cultivated in Ilam), coffee (predominantly in Gulmi and Syangja), sugarcane, jute, and ginger.
- Large Cardamom: Nepal is one of the world's leading producers of large cardamom, mainly cultivated in the eastern hilly districts of the Koshi Province, such as Taplejung, Panchthar, and Ilam.
Structural Challenges
- High dominance of low-yield subsistence farming over commercialized agriculture.
- Limited mechanization, heavy reliance on seasonal monsoon rain, and severe land fragmentation.
- Severe rural labor shortages due to the out-migration of youth seeking foreign employment.
National Initiatives
- Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project (PMAMP): A flagship program focusing on developing specialized agricultural zones, super-zones, and pocket areas.
- Agricultural Development Strategy (ADS) 2015–2035: A comprehensive $20$-year roadmap aimed at accelerating agricultural growth, enhancing food security, and promoting commercial competitiveness.
