Managerial Grid

Theory / Concept Name
Managerial Grid
Description

Robert Blake and Jane Mouton developed the Managerial Grid (later Leadership Grid) plotting leadership styles on two axes:

  • X-axis: Concern for production (1–9).
  • Y-axis: Concern for people (1–9).

Five Key Styles

  1. (1,1) Impoverished Management: Low concern for both production and people. Minimum effort; avoids conflict.
  2. (9,1) Authority-Compliance (Task Management): High production, low people. Efficiency at the expense of morale.
  3. (1,9) Country Club Management: High people, low production. Comfortable working environment but low output.
  4. (5,5) Middle-of-the-Road Management: Adequate performance and morale through compromise.
  5. (9,9) Team Management: High on both axes. This is presented as the best style as it builds commitment through participation.

Significance

The grid argues that (9,9) Team Management is universally the best style, distinguishing it from situational theories that suggest leadership effectiveness 'depends' on the context.
