Gantt Chart and Task-and-Bonus System
Description

Henry Gantt — Gantt Chart & Task-and-Bonus System

Henry Gantt (a colleague of Taylor) developed two enduring contributions:

Gantt Chart (c. 1910)

A bar chart that displays a project schedule, showing:

  • Tasks on the vertical axis.
  • Time on the horizontal axis.
  • Bars representing the start, duration, and end of each task.

Still one of the most widely used project-management tools today.

Task-and-Bonus System

  • Workers who complete the daily task within the standard time receive a bonus on top of their day wage.
  • Workers who do not complete the task still receive their day wage (unlike Taylor's punitive differential rate).
  • Supervisors also received bonuses when all workers under them met targets, aligning managerial incentives.

Significance

Humanised incentive pay; the Gantt chart became the foundation of modern project scheduling.
